Hazardous Material Removal, Decontamination and Decommissioning of a RFID Fabrication Facility
Morgan Hill, California
Alien Technology Corporation (Alien) operated a Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) manufacturing and R&D facility in Morgan Hill, California, called Area 51. The facility housed clean rooms, dry laboratories, hazardous materials, and waste storage areas, and an acid waste treatment unit. Alien closed the Area 51 facility, relocating the processes to their North Dakota facilities. To terminate their occupancy, Alien was required to remove all hazardous materials and process equipment from the facility and obtain approval from regulatory agencies with jurisdiction over the closure.
Weiss Associates developed a closure plan and managed the entire closure process. An efficient approach to removal of hazardous materials and wastes from the facility, decontamination of equipment, piping, and facility components was developed and executed. Weiss Associates negotiated a limited sampling plan for the facility. The closure was completed ahead of schedule and on budget. Waste generation was minimized by careful planning, and many of the surplus process tools were decontaminated and sold or donated to local laboratories.
